what we do

Artistic development

The performing arts are extremely empowering. They not only provide children and young people with enjoyment and fulfilling activities and constructive recreational opportunities, but also have powerful therapeutic benefits such as building character, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-discipline.

They build cultural bridges, unifying people across boundaries of language, culture, ability and gender. They have the power to unite groups and mobilize community involvement towards the improvement of quality of life, social healing and affirmation of human dignity.

Educational Support

The children of the Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg communities, currently, only have access to one Primary school namely Oranjekloof in the Imizamo Yethu area, and Sentinel Intermediate which serves both the communities of Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu. There is only one high school in Hangberg, Hout Bay High, which also has to service both communities. As one can imagine, classrooms are severely overcrowed, serious lack of amenities and infrastructure, so far as to say, that the schools have had to construct makeshift classrooms to accommodate the volumes. Having said, Jikeleza has taken it upon themselves to source schools outside of the area, who are able to accommodate the kids, where they receive more individual attention and are exposed to a wider curriculum and extra mural activities.

Social Upliftment

Feeding Scheme

A definite necessity in our project. To many of our kids, the only meal they have for the day is at Jikeleza. We strive to provide them on a daily basis, however, this is not always possible. It is however our policy to feed each child whenever we have performances or gigs. In addition to this we provide sandwiches and fruit every Monday & Wednesday.

Life Skills

Jikeleza conducts a series of life skills workshops during the course of the year. These have formed an integral part of our program. They cover various issues our youth are faced with. The workshops are always conducted outside of their environment. They’re fun yet educational and normally span over a 3 day period.  The workshops are facilitated by professionals and we usually partner with other NGO’s thus harnessing the expertise at low or no cost.
