Educational Support

The children of the Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg communities, currently, only have access to one Primary school namely Oranjekloof in the Imizamo Yethu area, and Sentinel Intermediate which serves both the communities of Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu. There is only one high school in Hangberg, Hout Bay High, which also has to service both communities. As one can imagine, classrooms are severely overcrowed, serious lack of amenities and infrastructure, so far as to say, that the schools have had to construct makeshift classrooms to accommodate the volumes. Having said, Jikeleza has taken it upon themselves to source schools outside of the area, who are able to accommodate the kids, where they receive more individual attention and are exposed to a wider curriculum and extra mural activities.

The number of single parent families is also significantly high. Social problems include illiteracy, xenophobia, substance abuse, gang violence, high incidence of crime, the abuse of women and children, a high rate of teenage pregnancies and HIV infection. As a result of these socioeconomic issues, our country currently faces an alarming 60% Matric pass rate, and an even more shocking statistic, is that 50% of children who register as Grade 1 pupils do not reach Grade 12!

Staying in school is a requirement to attend Jikeleza. We go so far as to pay 75% of school fees for those who cannot afford at secondary level, also purchasing the necessary uniform, stationery, textbooks and providing transport. In the event of special or extra tuition classes, we try to cover those costs as and when needed.
